Just 30 minutes into Gilas Pilipinas’ session in preparation for the 2019 FIBA World Cup Monday, Matthew Wright suddenly went to the sidelines and took off his gear.
Though he did not make contact with anyone, the 6-foot-2 sniper hurt his right ankle.
“It’s just precautionary. I’ll get an MRI tomorrow on my ankle and see how it is,” said Wright, who averaged 5.9 points during the Asian Qualifiers.
According to team physician Dexter Aseron, Wright’s peroneal tendon on his left leg was inflamed. And his case is much more delicate in comparison to JP Erram’s.
Wright was meant to be the team’s designated shooter, since Marcio Lassiter is still nursing a grade two MCL injury.
The Filipino-Candian is hoping for the best, as the global meet is just 12 days away.
“Hopefully I won’t miss a lot but definitely, I had to sit out today. It was pretty painful, so I need to get it checked out.”
