Carlos Alvarez barely broke a sweat in his sixth appearance at the iconic Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, delivering a swift and dominant performance at ONE Friday Fights 101, Friday evening.
The 25-year-old prospect from Baguio City made quick work of previously unbeaten Japanese bruiser Seiya Matsuda in their featherweight MMA showdown.
As Matsuda shot for a takedown, Alvarez read it perfectly, catching his opponent and swiftly locking in an anaconda choke.
Once the hold was secured, Matsuda found himself trapped in a vice-like grip with no escape in sight.
Alvarez tightened the choke further, unknowingly lulling the Japanese fighter to sleep and forcing the referee to step in just 17 seconds into the bout.
With the emphatic victory, Alvarez improved to 6-1 while keeping his flawless finishing rate intact. His performance also earned him a $10,000 bonus from ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong.
Now, he could be just one win away from securing a $100,000 contract and a coveted spot on the ONE Championship main roster.
However, it was a different story for Filipino newcomer Justin Jones Matoto earlier in the night.
Matoto struggled against Monjit Yein’s impeccable grappling, as the Indian debutant dominated their strawweight MMA clash from start to finish.
Yein imposed his will on the mat, chaining submission attempts with punishing ground-and-pound across three rounds.
Despite a spirited effort in the final frame, Matoto couldn’t turn the tide, as Yein comfortably cruised to a unanimous decision victory.
The win propelled Yein to a perfect 6-0 record. Meanwhile, Matoto suffered his first career loss, dropping to 3-1.
