For the first time, the UAAP Streetdance Competition will be held as a standalone event this season, marking a significant milestone for the league’s growing dance community.
The competition, a special event in the UAAP calendar, is set on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Blue Eagle Gym in Loyola Heights, Quezon City.
UAAP Executive Director Atty. Rene Saguisag Jr. underscored the distinction between the Streetdance and Cheerdance communities, emphasizing the importance of giving the former its own stage.
“The Streetdance and Cheerdance communities are distinct in identity, style, and culture. While both have long contributed to the spirit of UAAP, the Streetdance community has long been yearning for a platform they can truly call their own—one that provides a voice for the youth and a space for self-expression—and this event is a response to that call,” said Saguisag.
UAAP Season 88 Streetdance Commissioner Vimi Rivera welcomed the development, calling it a milestone for the discipline.
“The fact that Streetdance has been part of UAAP for so many years now is already a win for us. It’s the perfect platform for the Streetdance community in UAAP, and we are so grateful,” said Rivera.
“But to finally have a standalone event reinforces the support and significance we hold in UAAP. This is what we’ve been aiming for, and we will keep building on this moving forward.”
This year’s competition will feature two divisions, with all eight member schools competing in the collegiate division, while seven schools will see action in the high school category.
“Knowing the intensity, artistry, commitment, and competitiveness of all our teams, competitors, and coaches, this will be the best and biggest UAAP Streetdance competition yet,” Rivera added.
In the collegiate division, defending champions UP Street Dance Club will be gunning for their fifth overall crown. La Salle Dance Company-Street is also eyeing a fifth title, while UST Prime seeks to secure its third championship in four years.
In the high school division of this event subhosted by Ateneo, defending champions NUDC-Nazalian Street aim for a back-to-back title, while UST Galvanize looks to reclaim the crown and capture a fourth championship in five years.
