AJ Lim set the tone for the Philippines as they swept Pacific Oceania, 3-0, to open their 2025 Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group IV campaign on a strong note Wednesday at the National Tennis Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Fresh off their promotion from the lowest tier last season, Lim — a former University of the East standout — and the rest of the national squad made a confident first step toward returning to World Group contention with this win in Group B.
Lim delivered a commanding performance in the second singles match, defeating Nickolas Ngodrela, 7-5, 6-1, to firmly anchor the Philippines’ dominance over Pacific Oceania.
This match also marked the nations’ second meeting since 2012, when Johnny Arcilla clinched a 5-0 sweep for the Philippines in a Group II tie.
Arcilla now serves as the team’s assistant coach.
The eight-nation Group IV division is split into two pools, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the playoffs for a shot at promotion to Group III next year.
The Philippines last competed at the World Group Playoffs in 2021 against Greece before a two-year suspension from the International Tennis Federation sidelined the Philippine Tennis Association.
Earlier in the day, Jed Olivares — formerly of Ateneo de Manila University during UAAP Season 85 — got the ball rolling for the Philippines with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Gillian Osmont in the opening singles match.
Veteran doubles specialists Francis Alcantara and Ruben Gonzales then sealed the sweep with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Brett Baudinet and Maka Olfati.
Joining the Philippines and Pacific Oceania in Group B are Qatar and Kuwait, while Group A includes host nation Malaysia, along with Kyrgyzstan, Iraq, and Nepal.
