Alex Eala’s homecoming could become a record-setting celebration.
In the midst of a breakthrough season on the international tennis circuit, Eala will return to the Philippines on December 8 for ‘Alex Eala Live: Game. Set. Celebrate,’ with the Philippine Arena in Bulacan set to host what could be the biggest tennis crowd in history.
The event is targeting more than 52,000 spectators, putting it within reach of surpassing the current attendance record of 51,954 set when Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal played an exhibition match in Cape Town, South Africa.
Eala will headline the event with a showdown against Indonesia’s Janice Tjen, while the program will also feature matches involving Filipino prospects and celebrities.
Organized by Tatler Philippines, the celebration will extend beyond the court, with fan activities planned both inside and outside the massive venue.
For Eala, the event provides a chance to reconnect with the supporters who have followed her rapid rise, while also putting the spotlight on the next generation of Filipino tennis players.
“Every time I play abroad, I carry the Philippines with me,” Eala said in a statement.
“To come home and play in front of our fans will be incredibly special. I want this to be a day where we celebrate our love for tennis, our culture and the young players who will take the sport forward,” she added.
“And if all of us come together, maybe we can make a little history too.”
The December homecoming comes at the end of a season in which Eala has repeatedly broken new ground.
The Filipina won her first WTA 500 title at the Mubadala DC Open in Washington, D.C., a breakthrough that sent her into the world’s top 20. That came on the heels of another historic achievement at Wimbledon, becoming the first Filipino in the Open Era to advance to the fourth round at the All England Club.
Eala still has plenty on her schedule before returning home.
She is set to compete in her second US Open at Flushing Meadows before heading into the Asian swing, where she is expected to play tournaments in Singapore, China, and Japan.
She is also expected to suit up for the Philippines at the 20th Asian Games in Japan.
By the time she steps onto the court at the Philippine Arena, Eala could have added even more milestones to a season that has already reshaped the landscape of Philippine tennis.
