Alex Enriquez came within a single advantage point of another major international title, settling for the silver medal in the women’s -63kg division at the 20th Asian Games on Saturday at the Aichi Prefectural Martial Arts Hall.
Enriquez battled Thailand’s Orapa Senatham in a tightly contested championship bout that went the full six minutes and 56 seconds, with neither grappler able to produce a scoring maneuver throughout regulation.
The Filipina and Thai standout neutralized each other’s attacks from start to finish, with both fighters finishing the bout without a single two-, three-, or four-point action. Neither also committed a penalty, leaving the match tied at 0-0 on points.
Senatham, however, claimed one advantage point to break the deadlock and secure the gold medal, while Enriquez had to settle for silver.
Despite the narrow defeat, Enriquez added another major international medal to an already decorated résumé.
The 27-year-old Fil-Am is a world champion, having captured the 2023 World Championship in Warsaw before also ruling the No-Gi World Championship in Las Vegas. She added another international gold medal to her collection at the Asian Beach Games in Sanya last April.
Meanwhile, Andrea Lao also got bronze in the division.
Enriquez’s silver also gave the jiijitsu team another medal after Kaila Napolis won bronze in the women’s -52kg division on Friday.
