Philippines ends Asian Games with biggest medal haul in 60 years

For six decades, the Philippines had waited for an Asian Games campaign that could rival the glory of its past.

That wait finally ended in Nagoya.

Team Philippines closed the 20th Asian Games on Sunday with four gold medals, nine silvers, and 16 bronzes for 29 medals — the country’s biggest haul in 60 years.

The Philippines last collected more than that in 1966, when it returned from Bangkok with 42 medals. While the 2026 delegation could not match that historic haul, its performance in Nagoya gave Philippine sports one of its most memorable Asian Games campaigns in generations.

The country finished 17th overall, matching its ranking from the 2023 Hangzhou Games, but this time with a deeper medal haul and several athletes etching their names into the record books.

At the center of it all was Carlos Yulo.

The gymnastics superstar delivered two of the Philippines’ four gold medals, ruling the men’s floor exercise and vault — the same events in which he had already reached the summit at the Olympics.

Yulo’s double-gold performance also completed an extraordinary collection of major titles. After conquering the World Championships, Asian Championships, World Cup and Southeast Asian Games, he finally added an Asian Games crown to complete the ‘Grand Slam.’

More importantly, Yulo became the first Filipino gymnast to win an Asian Games medal.

His golden double gave the delegation an early surge and set the tone for a campaign filled with historic firsts.2026-Asian-Games-EJ-Obiena-gold-3 Philippines ends Asian Games with biggest medal haul in 60 years 2026 Asian Games News POC/PSC - philippine sports news

The reigning Asian Games champion successfully defended his men’s pole vault title, clearing 5.91 meters to establish a new Asian Games record.

The mark also placed Obiena in an exclusive group, making him only the fourth athlete to win the men’s pole vault title at two consecutive Asian Games.

Then came a breakthrough in taekwondo.

Jeus Yape made history in an event that was itself making its Asian Games debut. Yape captured gold in the mixed individual virtual taekwondo competition, giving the Philippines its first-ever Asian Games gold medal in the sport.

His triumph came after he had already secured bronze in men’s individual poomsae, making his Nagoya campaign a milestone for Philippine taekwondo.

Four golds ultimately matched the country’s totals from Hangzhou in 2023 and Jakarta-Palembang in 2018.

Still, there was a sense that the delegation had come agonizingly close to something even bigger.

The Philippine Olympic Committee and Philippine Sports Commission had targeted eight gold medals before the Games — a number that would have given the country its first five-gold-or-more performance since the seven-gold campaign in 1962.

Instead, the fifth gold remained just out of reach.

One after another, Philippine athletes came within touching distance of adding another championship to the tally.

Boxer Carlo Paalam reached the men’s 55kg final, while Tachiana Mangin and Kurt Barbosa advanced to the championship bouts in women’s -49kg and men’s -58kg taekwondo, respectively.

All three, however, came up short in their final fights.

By Saturday, only Alex Enriquez remained between the Philippines and a fifth gold.

There were disappointments, but Nagoya was hardly short on breakthroughs.

In athletics, Victoria Bossong claimed bronze in the women’s 800 meters, while John Cabang Tolentino added another in the men’s 110m hurdles.

Each medal helped paint a bigger picture of a Philippine delegation that was not carried by a handful of established stars alone.

There were champions, finalists, breakthrough performers and young athletes who showed that the country’s competitive depth continues to grow.

At the top of the Asian Games standings, China once again stood alone.

The Chinese delegation dominated the competition with 169 golds, 89 silvers and 83 bronzes to claim its 12th consecutive overall championship.

Host Japan finished second with 83 golds, 95 silvers and 91 bronzes, while South Korea was third with 39 golds, 43 silvers and 68 bronzes.

Thailand emerged as Southeast Asia’s top-performing nation, finishing seventh with an 18-13-21 medal record. Malaysia followed in 11th with nine golds, seven silvers and 16 bronzes, while Indonesia placed 16th with five golds, 11 silvers and 23 bronzes.

Then came the Philippines. Seventeenth in the final standings with four golds, nine silvers and 16 bronzes — 29 medals in all.

The country may have fallen short of its ambitious gold-medal target, but Nagoya still gave Philippine sports something worth celebrating: a generation of athletes capable of rewriting records, breaking barriers, and carrying the country back onto the continental podium.
