The Philippines has a new track star.
Harvard graduate Victoria Bossong became the first Filipina in 32 years to win an Asian Games Athletics medal, keeping pace with the best middle-distance runners in the region to claim bronze in the women’s 800 meters on Tuesday at Aichi-Nagoya 2026.
The 23-year-old topped the 14-runner heats by the narrowest of margins, clocking 2:02.34, just 0.01 seconds ahead of second-place Li Chunhui, the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships 1,500-meter gold medalist.
Bossong faced a tougher challenge in the final at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium, where she clocked 2:05.34 in her first-ever competition under the Philippine flag.
China’s Asian Indoor champion Wu Hongjiao won the gold in 2:04.49, while Bahrain’s Nelly Korir took silver in 2:05.16.
Bossong’s bronze ended a 32-year wait for a Filipina athletics medal at the Asian Games.
The last Filipina to win an Asiad medal in athletics was the legendary Elma Muros, who claimed long jump bronze at the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima.
Bossong advanced to the final ahead of Sabokhat Samijonova of Uzbekistan, the 2026 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 800-meter silver medalist; 18-year-old Japanese national record holder Rin Kubo; and 2025 Asian Indoor 800-meter bronze medalist Pooja Olla of India.
