The Philippines has a new track star.
Harvard graduate Victoria Bossong became the first Filipina in 32 years to win an Asian Games athletics medal, keeping pace with the best middle-distance runners in the region to claim bronze in the women’s 800 meters on Tuesday at Aichi-Nagoya 2026.
The 23-year-old topped the 14-runner heats by the narrowest of margins, clocking 2:02.34, just 0.01 seconds ahead of second-place Li Chunhui, the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships 1,500-meter gold medalist.
Bossong faced a tougher challenge in the final at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium, where she clocked 2:05.34 in her first-ever competition under the Philippine flag.
China’s Asian Indoor champion Wu Hongjiao won the gold in 2:04.49, while Bahrain’s Nelly Korir took silver in 2:05.16.
Despite missing out on gold, Bossong was proud to leave her Asian Games debut with a medal for the Philippines.
“I wish I could be here with a gold medal, but I gave it my best today. I’m just happy I was able to bring home a medal for the Philippines. I hope next time it’s a gold, though,” she said.

Bossong also acknowledged that her final time was well below her usual standard.
“The time was quite slow this time. I haven’t run that time in a few years,” she said. “It’s definitely, you know, coming into these competitions, as I was saying yesterday, it’s not about the time, it’s about going out there and winning. And I failed to do that today.”
Still, the 23-year-old viewed her first major competition for the Philippines as an important learning experience.
“I think these games are a good experience, just learning how to race well. I think I’m fast, I’m fit, but there’s part of my racing element that I just don’t have there quite yet,” Bossong said.
“There’s some experience that I’m learning by coming to these games. So I’m excited to take the lessons from here and use them for good next time.”
Bossong’s bronze ended a 32-year wait for a Filipina athletics medal at the Asian Games.
The last Filipina to win an Asiad medal in athletics was the legendary Elma Muros, who claimed long jump bronze at the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima.

Bossong advanced to the final ahead of Sabokhat Samijonova of Uzbekistan, the 2026 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 800-meter silver medalist; 18-year-old Japanese national record holder Rin Kubo; and 2025 Asian Indoor 800-meter bronze medalist Pooja Olla of India.
Beyond the medal itself, however, Bossong said the support she received from Filipino fans made her Asian Games experience even more meaningful.
“I’m happy to bring home anything, you know, to the Philippines, any hardware. Most importantly, I’m just really happy because today, even before I ran, I received so much support. So many girls were saying, ‘You’re such an inspiration to me,’” she said.
“That just means so much. And I know that’s why I’m here doing it. It was to see those messages, to see them make an impact on people. So no matter what I brought home, I’m happy.”
