Victoria Bossong showed that she is not only as good as advertised but also a serious medal contender in athletics at the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026.
Making her maiden appearance under the Philippine flag, Bossong debuted in style by topping Heat 2 of the women’s 800 meters on Monday at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium.
Despite the rainy conditions, the Harvard product clocked 2:02.34 to finish ahead of all runners from both heats, edging China’s Li Chunhui, who posted 2:02.35, and Uzbekistan’s Sabokhat Samijonova, who timed 2:02.64.
The 23-year-old Bossong, a Neuroscience graduate of Harvard University, will gun for gold in the final on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. (Manila time).
Aside from Li, the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships gold medalist in the 1,500m, and Samijonova, the 2026 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships silver medalist in the 800m, Bossong will face a stellar field that includes Asian Indoor champion Wu Hongjiao of China, 18-year-old Japanese national record holder Rin Kubo, and 2025 Asian Indoor 800m bronze medalist Pooja Olla of India.
Also competing on Tuesday is EJ Obiena, who will see action in the men’s pole vault as he begins his bid for an Asian Games gold medal.
