Carlos Yulo is the Philippines’ first-ever double Olympic champion.
The 24-year-old gymnastics star secured his second Olympic title by topping the Men’s Vault Final with a score of 15.166 on Sunday at the Bercy Arena.
With a more relaxed approach after winning his first gold the previous night, Yulo demonstrated that the vault is also his domain.
And his performance earned a milestone not only in his sport, but for Philippine sports in general.
After everything Yulo has been through, this achievement proves that his hard work has paid off, etching his name into the annals of Philippine sports history.
The Adamson University product gave everyone a preview of his capabilities by executing the Ri Se Gwang in the individual all-around final, and he showcased it once again in this event.
With power and confidence, Yulo made it count in this final to secure the historic title.
Despite previously having trouble with the vault, Yulo performed the 6.6-difficulty vault when it mattered most. Coupled with a 9.433 execution score, his total score of 15.433 set the bar sky-high.
A routine from the 2021 Worlds champion on vault, the Kasamatsu double, ended with a score of 14.800, which stood after four gymnasts, including Armenia’s Artur Davtyan.
Davtyan won the silver with a score of 14.966, edging out Great Britain’s Harry Hepworth, who scored 14.949.
