Alex Eala showed tremendous fight and resilience, pushing Diana Shnaider to the limit before eventually bowing out in a three-set battle, 6-2, 6(5)-7(7), 4-6, in the quarterfinals of the 2026 WTA 500 Pan Pacific Open on Friday at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan.
The Filipina ace looked poised for another breakthrough after dominating the opening set, but Shnaider mounted a determined comeback to end Eala’s campaign in the Asian swing tournament after nearly three hours of action.
Eala came out firing in the opening set, recovering from an early deficit to win five consecutive games and seize a commanding 5-1 advantage.
Shnaider managed to stop the bleeding by taking the seventh game, but Eala remained composed on serve, converting her set point to close out the opener, 6-2.
The second set, however, turned into a grueling battle of serves, with neither player managing to break the other through the first 12 games.
Eala had several opportunities to gain the upper hand, particularly in Shnaider’s service games. But the Russian repeatedly found a way to escape pressure and force the set into a tiebreak.
There, Shnaider established a 5-3 advantage before Eala clawed her way back with two consecutive points to level the score.
However, a costly double fault from the Filipina handed Shnaider a set point. The Russian made no mistake on the next point, taking the tiebreak, 7-5, to force a deciding third set.
With momentum swinging in Shnaider’s favor, the Russian carried her fight into the decider, breaking Eala in the third game to take a 2-1 lead.
Shnaider then strung together three consecutive games to build a 3-1 advantage, although Eala refused to go away quietly.
The Filipina briefly received medical attention on her right ankle but returned to the court and continued to battle, holding serve to pull within 3-2.
Eala continued to fight for every point, producing a massive hold in the seventh game and roaring in celebration despite trailing 4-3. Shnaider, however, remained steady under pressure, holding serve to move within a game of victory at 5-3.
Facing elimination, Eala dug deep once more, holding serve to cut the deficit to 5-4 and keep her hopes alive.
But Shnaider proved too difficult to contain in the end, holding her nerve to serve out the match and secure her place in the semifinals.
The defeat marked another setback for Eala against the Russian, who also prevailed in their meeting at the Ningbo Open last week, 7-5, 6-4.
Despite the loss, Eala had plenty to take away from her Tokyo campaign, having reached her first quarterfinal of this year’s Asian swing.
She booked her place in the last eight after dispatching Talia Gibson in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, recovering from a first-set loss to cruise to a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory.
