Eager to make up for lost time, Rhenz Abando is more than willing to do whatever it takes for another shot at glory with Gilas Pilipinas as the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup approaches, scheduled from August 5 to 20 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Abando, who last suited up for the national team during the 2023 FIBA World Cup held in Manila, has remained on the radar of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.
He was initially being considered for last year’s FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Europe, but was unable to secure a spot due to visa issues.
Now, with another opportunity to represent the Philippines on the continental stage, the 27-year-old wingman didn’t hesitate to answer the call from Gilas team manager Richard del Rosario to join the deep talent pool for the Asia Cup.
“Yes, actually nakita ko siya kahapon pero nalaman ko na ‘yon after ng tune-up game namin [ng Strong Group Athletics] against Ateneo noong Friday pa,” said Abando.
“Tinawagan ako ni Coach Richard del Rosario, tinanong niya ako kung pwede ba niya ako isama sa pool, kaya siyempre, sino ba naman hihindi ‘di ba?”
Abando is fully aware of the tough competition and the rigorous process he’ll need to go through to earn a spot in the final 12-man lineup under Gilas head coach Tim Cone.
Yet, regardless of the outcome, the former University of Santo Tomas and Letran standout is simply grateful to be considered once again.
Among the players in the mix for the final roster are Magnolia’s Zavier Lucero, Barangay Ginebra duo RJ Abarrientos and Troy Rosario, along with national team mainstays Scottie Thompson, Japeth Aguilar, Jamie Malonzo, Calvin Oftana, Chris Newsome, CJ Perez, June Mar Fajardo, Carl Tamayo, and Dwight Ramos.
“Sabi rin naman niya na kasama ka sa pool pero hindi pa sigurado. Pero for me, it’s an honor pa rin na makasama ulit sa pool,” said the former Anyang JKJ import, who played two seasons in the Korean Basketball League.
Before fully committing to the national team’s preparations, Abando will first fulfill his duties with Strong Group Athletics as they defend their crown in the 44th William Jones Cup, set from July 12 to 20 in Taiwan.
Fortunately, Del Rosario and the rest of the Gilas coaching staff have given him their blessing to compete with SGA in the Jones Cup before joining the national squad immediately after the tournament.
“Alam din naman nila na nasa SGA pa ako. Aantayin pa nila na matapos yung sa Jones Cup and tatawagan daw nila ako after pag kailangan ko na magpakita sa mga practice,” Abando shared.
