The Philippines clinched a spot in the promotional playoffs of the 2025 Davis Cup Group IV Asia/Oceania tournament after completing a dominant 3-0 sweep over Kuwait in Group B action on Thursday at the National Tennis Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
In this eight-team tournament, the top two teams from each pool earn the opportunity to advance to Group III.
With a clean 2-0 record, the Philippines secured one of those coveted spots and will face fellow unbeaten squad Qatar on Friday in a match-up that will determine the top team in Group B.
In the opening singles match, Jed Olivarez outlasted Ali Alshati in a hard-fought battle, pulling away in the final set to win, 7-5, 4-6, 6-0.
His victory set the tone for the Philippines as they continued their push to return to World Group contention.
AJ Lim then sealed the overall win by defeating Bader Abdullah in the second singles match with a commanding 6-4, 6-1 performance, giving the Philippines its fourth straight tie win over Kuwait in Davis Cup history.
In doubles, Francis Alcantara and Arthur Pantino were leading 2-1 when the Kuwaiti pair of Abdullah and Alshati were forced to retire, preserving the Philippines’ flawless record of six match wins heading into the final round of pool play.
The Filipinos had also swept Pacific Oceania, 3-0, the previous day, making it back-to-back perfect ties.
In the promotional playoffs, the Philippines will face either host Malaysia or Kyrgyzstan — both unbeaten in Group A.
The winner of their Friday showdown will determine who faces the Philippines in the next stage, where a promotion to Group III is at stake.
