Own goal sinks Philippines as Indonesia escapes with narrow win in Mandiri Cup clash

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the Philippine Men’s Under-23 National Team suffered its first defeat in the ASEAN U-23 Mandiri Cup, falling 1-0 to host nation Indonesia on Friday at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.

The lone goal came in the 23rd minute, when Filipino defender Jaime Rosquillo inadvertently headed the ball into his own net off a long throw-in by Indonesian midfielder Robby Darwis.

It was an unfortunate moment that ultimately defined the match.

Indonesia, coming off a dominant 8-0 win over Brunei on opening day, appeared confident of another rout in front of a packed home crowd.

But the Filipinos, led by goalkeeper Nico Guimarães, held their ground. Guimarães made several crucial saves to keep head coach Garrath McPherson’s side within striking distance throughout the match.

Despite the loss, the Philippines remains in contention, dropping to third place in Group A with three points and a +1 goal difference.

Malaysia climbed to second (three points, +4 GD) following its emphatic 7-1 win over Brunei earlier in the day. Indonesia now sits atop the group with six points from two consecutive victories.

All four teams in Group A are set to return to action this Monday at 9 p.m. (Manila time).

Indonesia will face Malaysia at Gelora Bung Karno, while the Philippines will take on Brunei at the Patriot Stadium in West Java.

To advance to the semifinals, Indonesia simply needs to avoid defeat against Malaysia.

For the Philippines, the task is more complicated—they must beat Brunei and hope for a favorable outcome in the other Group A match, as well as possible results from other groups, to secure a place in the knockout stage.
