Koji Tsuzurabara departs Petro Gazz, returns to Japan for family

In a surprising turn of events, Koji Tsuzurabara has parted ways with Petro Gazz, with the Japanese tactician returning home to be closer to his family, the Angels announced Friday afternoon.

In an official statement posted on Facebook, Petro Gazz confirmed that Tsuzurabara will be pursuing “new opportunities” while prioritizing time with his loved ones in Japan.

“Coach Koji, as you return home to Japan to be with your family, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude. Your decision to pursue new opportunities in your continuing volleyball journey is acknowledged with deep respect. Thank you for the time and dedication you have shared with us,” the team said.

“You have been more than just a coach—you have been a mentor, a teacher, and a true inspiration. We are especially grateful for the legacy you leave behind, having led us to our first-ever All-Filipino Championship in the PVL. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors.”

Tsuzurabara spent two full seasons and three conferences with Petro Gazz, capping his tenure with a historic championship run in the 2024-25 PVL All-Filipino Conference, where the Angels dethroned powerhouse Creamline in the finals.

The 60-year-old veteran coach made an immediate impact upon joining the team, steering Petro Gazz to a bronze finish in his debut conference during the 2024 All-Filipino tilt. However, the squad slipped in the following Reinforced Conference, finishing in sixth place and missing out on the podium.

Tsuzurabara also led the team through the early stages of the ongoing PVL On Tour, compiling a 1-3 record in four games without star players Brooke Van Sickle and MJ Phillips, both of whom are currently with Alas Pilipinas.

His departure marks the second consecutive time Petro Gazz has bid farewell to its head coach after winning a championship. In 2022, Rald Ricafort exited shortly after leading the club to the PVL Reinforced Conference title.

Tsuzurabara’s exit means the Angels are now searching for their sixth head coach in just four years.
