The SMART/MVPSF Philippine Taekwondo Team concluded a stellar season with an impressive haul of two silver and eight bronze medals at the 2024 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Hong Kong.
The pair of Justin Kobe Macario and Juvenile Crisostomo delivered an almost flawless performance to secure the silver medal in the freestyle over-17 category. Similarly, Leno Maximuz Subaste and Julianna Martha Uy claimed silver in the junior pair event.
These accomplishments build on the momentum from Tachiana Mangin’s historic gold medal in the women’s -49kg division at the World Taekwondo Junior Championships in Chuncheon, South Korea.
Mangin’s victory marked the Philippines’ first gold in the competition since Alex Borromeo triumphed in the men’s -47kg category in Barcelona, Spain, in 1996.
The Philippine contingent, supported by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee, also brought home individual bronze medals through Darius Venerable (freestyle over-17), Ian Matthew Corton (male under-30), June Ninobla (male under-60), and Jaynazh Angelo Jamias (cadet male individual).
In the freestyle team over-17 event, Asian Games bronze medalist Patrick King Perez joined forces with Juvenile Faye Crisostomo, Janna Dominique Oliva, Justin Kobe Macario, and Jeus Gabriel Derick Yape to clinch another bronze medal.
Meanwhile, Jamias teamed up with Kian Ezekiel Castigador and Xian Gabriel Gamata to secure bronze in the cadet male recognized team under-17 category.
In the cadet pair division, Alfonzo Gabriel Tormon and Joniya Yua Ysabelle Obiacoro also captured a bronze medal.
The tournament brought together the world’s best poomsae practitioners, further highlighting the Philippine team’s commendable achievements on the global stage.
