UAAP unveils ‘sipa’ inspired logo for Season 84

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines announced on Friday the winning entries in the UAAP Logo Design Contest.

UAAP President Emmanuel Calanog named the entry of Darryl John Digal of Far Eastern University as the top prize winner from among 200 submissions.

The league will formally unveil the winning logo during the UAAP Season 84 opening, tentatively set in March 2022.

In his design brief, Digal said that the logo symbolizes “our athletic heritage and culture, emphasizing the mission to promote cultural diversity, character development, and athletic excellence.”

Inspired by the traditional sport “Sipa”, the logo was compared by Digal to the national sport that “taught us to develop our sportsmanship and values such as camaraderie, fairness, and civility.”

“The colors that represent the participating universities united to bring out the spirit and harmony of the association,” Digal said. “The logo also embodies the synergy that connects and binds the universities to be united as one to show young athletes how sports bring unity in diversity, equity, and excellence.”

Digal’s entry got the nod of a distinguished group of judges headed by Sydney Samodio, McCann World Group Philippines Executive Creative Director. The other judges include leading advertising industry executives who are also alumni of UAAP member schools.

Second place went to John Dairence Capua of FEU, while the design of Marwin Mendoza of Talisay City, Batangas was adjudged third place.

The Top 9 includes Alvi Songco of Silang, Cavite, John Bermejo of Caloocan City, God Levi Santiago of Sta. Rosa, Laguna, Ismael Sanchez of Pasig City, University of Santo Tomas student Ralph Rainell Estrella, and Joshua Tuonan of Puerto Princesa City.
