For many athletes, the ultimate dream is to don their nation’s colors and compete on the international stage.
For Ernie Calipay of Far Eastern University, that dream is steadily turning into a reality.
Following a stellar performance in the UAAP Season 87 Athletics Tournament, Calipay has his eyes set on representing the Philippines at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in December 2025 in Thailand.
The high jumper from Northern Samar made headlines when he successfully defended his title in the High Jump Men’s Category, setting a new personal and UAAP record with a stunning leap of 2.10 meters.
This feat eclipsed his previous mark of 2.05 meters, set during Season 86, and solidified his place as one of the country’s top athletes in the sport.
While his remarkable achievement was celebrated by many, Calipay’s journey to success was not without its struggles.
The 24-year-old admitted to grappling with doubts about his performance during the pre-season. Despite his internal battles, he found the strength to persevere.
Calipay credited his coaches for their unwavering support and guidance, which helped him channel his energy and focus on his goals.
He acknowledged their tough love and the lessons they imparted, even during moments when he struggled to follow their advice.
“Syempre hard training, and then siguro naman di ako magsisinungaling may time na napupuyat ako.
With the UAAP season now behind him, Calipay’s focus has shifted entirely to preparing for the SEA Games.
He is determined to maintain his momentum and continue improving his performance through rigorous training and participation in key events like the PATAFA National Open.
“Kumbaga yung PATAFA, yung National Open, at UAAP kasama na siya sa training namin sa SEA Games kasi pag na-break mo ung PATAFA, UAAP and National, (or) pag maganda performance mo pwede ka na nila kukunin sa SEA Games,” Calipay explained, outlining the pathway to achieving his ultimate goal.
