Columbian Dyip’s run early in the 2018 Governors’ Cup has already been in the doldrums. On Wednesday evening at the SMART Araneta Coliseum, they lost to the NLEX Road Warriors, stretching their winless streak to three games.
The loss had some significance in it, but for the wrong reasons. The franchise has lost 19 straight games in the Governors’ Cup — their last taste of a win in the conference was in 2016, when they were still known as the Mahindra Enforcer.
But in all of the dark clouds that have covered Dyip, a glimmer of hope in Jerramy King is shining on them.
The six-foot guard has been a consistent provider for Columbian. In their loss to the Road Warriors, King finished as the Dyip’s second-best performer with 22 points on 6-of-11 shooting, on top of seven rebounds and three assists.
After Wednesday, the Filipino-American is now averaging 24.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists.
“I’m just thankful God’s blessed me with this opportunity,” said King, NLEX’s 36th overall pick back in the 2015 Draft.
“I’m taking advantage of it the best I can, I’m practicing hard, and doing everything my coaching staff wants me to do.”
King though is aware that his efforts has yet to translate to a victory. He and Columbian will next face defending champions Barangay Ginebra San Miguel this Friday, and that will definitely be another tall mountain to climb.
But King isn’t backing down.
“Definitely, it’s gonna be a tough challenge. But we’re up for it,” said the 27-year-old King, a product of NCAA Division 1 school Long Beach State. “This team is hungry for a win.
“We just gotta keep fighting.”
