San Beda University has secured a major addition for the future, with Filipino-Canadian guard Tyler Garcia committing to the Red Lions for a “one-and-done” stint in NCAA Season 103.
The 5-foot-10 playmaker will serve the mandatory residency requirement in Season 102 before becoming eligible next year. He will bolster a San Beda squad expected to undergo a transition following the graduation of senior guards Jimmy Reyes, RC Calimag, and Penny Estacio.
Garcia’s arrival gives the Red Lions another experienced floor general to pair with former Ateneo standout Lebron Nieto, while also joining a backcourt that features Daniel Marcelo, Maco Dabao, Dom Sarigumba, and the returning Nygel Gonzales.
“I am excited to get started with the team and am looking forward to playing in front of the fans and family,” Garcia said.
Garcia first caught the attention of Philippine basketball fans during the 2019 Chooks-to-Go NBTC National Finals, where he suited up for Mike Cruz’s Durham Crossover Canada squad.

He eventually continued his basketball career in Canada, spending four years with McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.
During his collegiate career, Garcia once shared the backcourt with current Dallas Mavericks guard Andrew Nembhard. In his fourth season with the Marauders, Garcia averaged 11.4 points, 4.0 assists, and 2.4 rebounds per game.
Despite receiving opportunities to begin his professional career in the Canadian Elite Basketball League, Garcia opted to preserve his remaining collegiate eligibility.
He also drew interest from several UAAP programs before ultimately choosing San Beda.
“I felt like it was the best situation for me to go pro, as I only have one year left of eligibility, and San Beda welcomed me and treated me like family from the jump,” he said.
For Garcia, the move also represents a long-awaited return to Philippine basketball after several years abroad.
“I am excited to play back home. Last time I played in the Philippines was NBTC, and it was a great experience,” he added.
“My goal is to win an NCAA championship and go pro.”
