Baterbonia’s mother finds solace in UAAP’s decision to ban Baldwin for life

Hours after the UAAP announced its decisions regarding the “team-building” activity of Ateneo de Manila University last June 8 that resulted in the deaths of Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili in Dipaculao, Aurora, Rovelyn, Rene’s mother, took to social media to express her thoughts.

Sharing a post about Tab Baldwin being perpetually banned by the league with no appeal, Rovelyn had three simple words: “Thank you, God.”

It was a simple yet powerful reaction from the grieving mother, who has been mourning for 60 days as of Friday.

Since her son’s passing, Baldwin has yet to reach out to the Baterbonia family to explain what actually transpired during the activity.

The family had only gotten to speak with University president Fr. Bobby Yap, resigned team manager Epok Quimpo, athletic director Em Fernandez, and assistant coaches Dean Castaño and Sandro Soriano, the latter two of whom were also in Dipaculao.

Baldwin only apologized through a video on June 12, four days after the tragedy. He resigned from his post three days later.

As of Friday, no cases have been filed yet in connection with the incident.

The Blue Eagles, meanwhile, have been cleared to play in UAAP Season 89, as they were also victims and survivors of the tragic incident.

Both Rovelyn and Rene Sr. are currently in Manila.

On Thursday, the Philippine Senate adopted a resolution extending its sympathy and condolences to the families and loved ones of Rene Baterbonia.

Resolution No. 57 honored student-athlete Baterbonia for his inspiring example to the Filipino youth, his deep love for his family and country, and his excellent athleticism and valour as a young sports hero.
