Kelra impresses in debut but SIBOL MLBB slides to third in Asiad qualis

SENTOSA, Singapore – The SIBOL Mobile Legends: Bang Bang national team experienced a mix of highs and lows in the international debut of star gold laner Duane Pillas, splitting its Day 2 assignments with a victory over Laos and a loss to Cambodia on Friday in the 2026 Asian Games Qualifiers at the Resorts World Sentosa Convention Centre here.

The split results dropped the Filipinos to third place in the standings with a 2-1 record after the second day of competition, as the race for berths in the Asian Games main stage intensified.

Despite the setback, Philippine Esports Organization Executive Director Marlon Marcelo urged calm, expressing confidence that SIBOL remains in a strong position to qualify for the Asian Games proper.

“Mataas pa rin naman yung chance natin na mag-qualify at maganda naman yung pinakita ng Cambodia. So it’s more of, since bago yung patch, medyo nagkakapaan pa. Pero wala namang worry. Yung team naman natin kaya pa ring mag-perform to the highest level,” said Marcelo.

Marcelo also noted that the Philippines remains one of the most heavily studied teams in the competition, making adaptation and preparation even more important moving forward.

“Nakabantay lang rin kasi sila lahat sa atin. So we have to be more prepared sa mga ilalabas na strats,” he added.

With Pillas in the lineup against Laos, the Filipinos showcased their dominance in the opener as the 21-year-old gold laner punctuated a commanding 10-minute victory with a triple kill in the closing moments.

He finished with an impressive stat line of eight kills and seven assists against just one death while using Karrie.

Pillas carried his strong form into Game 2, earning MVP honors on Harith after posting eight kills and nine assists with only one death, leading SIBOL to a convincing series sweep.

In their second match of the day, SIBOL appeared headed for another dominant win after building a commanding 6,000-gold advantage. However, Cambodia’s Hy Meng Kong, playing Yu Zhong, single-handedly caught Dave Viana Jr.’s Harith from the backline, triggering a crucial 4-for-1 exchange that allowed Cambodia to secure the 15th-minute Lord and erase the entire gold deficit.

The Philippines eventually relied on the veteran composure of Sanford Vinuya’s Paquito, who continuously applied pressure across the map through split-pushing and diversionary plays. His efforts created the opening SIBOL needed to secure the 21st-minute Lord and a game-clinching 2-for-1 trade.

After dropping Game 2 in one-sided fashion, SIBOL seized control early in the deciding Game 3, building a 1,500-gold lead behind a 3-0 kill advantage.

However, Cambodia caught the Filipinos flat-footed during a pivotal 10th-minute Lord fight, baiting SIBOL into an unfavorable engagement before securing four crucial pickoffs and claiming the first Lord objective of the decider.

The Cambodians then capitalized on Vincent Keo Phavin’s timely Blazing Duet with Claude to force a 3-0 wipe in a 15th-minute skirmish that ultimately sealed the series.

Despite the defeat, the Filipinos remain firmly in contention for qualification and will look to regroup quickly as they continue their bid for one of the six available spots in the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan.
