Pongsiri PK.Saenchai Muaythaigym is hopeful that his return to the bantamweight division in the ONE Super Series will yield better results.
But it is not like he will have it any easier as he faces another World Champion in his return to his natural weight class.
Waiting for him in the division is WBC Muay Thai World Champion Sean “Clubber” Clancy in the main event of ONE: A New Breed II, which was previously recorded in Bangkok, Thailand, but will air this Friday, September 11.
After competing in the featherweight division for the duration of his career in The Home Of Martial Arts, the 29-year-old is confident he can better showcase his talents in the lighter division.
“This is the weight class I want to be in,” Pongsiri told ONEFC.com.
“I’m most comfortable with it in terms of forward movements and weapons. I want to prove to myself that I can become a champion in this weight class.”
Pongsiri faced Petchmorakot Petchyindee Academy for the inaugural ONE Featherweight Muay Thai World Title, and while he pushed his compatriot to the final bell, he ultimately lost via unanimous decision.
Recently, Pongsiri fell to Petchmorakot’s teammate in Sorgraw Petchyindee Academy, prompting his move back to the bantamweight division.
“When I was fighting in the 70.3-kilogram weight class, it was bigger. I learned that it’s a disadvantage being smaller after I was attacked. My heavy weapons became light because [my opponents] were bigger,” he said.
“This is my natural weight class. It’s good. I am determined to fight in this weight class for a long time. It’s what I am used to and I can show my moves faster.”
This Friday, Pongsiri plans to prove just that with a big knockout win.
“I am determined to walk forward and approach him from round one,” Pongsiri said.
“My weapons’ strength is great. I have great experience, I do more forward approaches, and I do shin kicks and elbow strikes. I plan to make him tired, and I expect to knock him out with my elbows.”
