As the storied franchise continues to change, the Alaska Aces will move on from Mike Harris.
In a video posted on his Facebook page Monday (Manila time), the 36-year-old forward regretfully announced that he will not be returning for a second tour of duty in the PBA.
An earlier report told that he was set to become the Aces’ import for the 2019 Governors’ Cup, but Harris said that the new coaching staff led by Jeffrey Cariaso has decided to go another way.
Cariaso is now Alaska’s new head coach after Alex Compton recently stepped down from the position.
“They’re not gonna bring me back this year so, unfortunately, I won’t be able to continue with my guys and the chance to pursue that fifteenth championship,” said the 6-foot-5 Harris.
“Thought I was coming back. I was excited. But the new coaching staff decided to go another route.”
Harris had actually been on Compton’s radar for many years. It was only in 2018, though, that he finally played for Alaska. And he made an impact right away as he steered the Aces to the Finals.
Harris averaged 29.6 points, 20.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.1 blocks last year and bagged home Best Import honors. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough, as they fell to Magnolia in the title bout.
Despite the disappointment, Harris understands that it’s all part of the business. He now wishes his former team the best of luck.
“It’s a business decision,” said the 14-year pro from Texas.
“I wish the Alaska Aces nothing but the best. Hope you guys have a chance to compete for the championship this season.”
