Carl Cruz still could not believe the “big blessing” from above that came his way.
The third-year Alaska Aces forward has inked a one-year deal with international sportswear brand PUMA to be one of their ambassadors just this Wednesday, June 5, during the Puma Tradeshow at Seda Vertis North.
“Yung time na nalaman ko na Puma was interested in me, hindi talaga ako makapaniwala,” Cruz told Tiebreaker Times. “Kasi, I never dreamt na mangyayari ‘to sa buhay ko. It’s really a big achievement for me, for my career.
“Big blessing galing kay God,” he added.
“Ito yung tinatawag na God’s grace – blessings na unexpected talaga.”
Aside from the 27-year-old, PUMA have also signed Blackwater Elite’s rookie Abu Tratter. The brand returned to the basketball scene in 2018 after nearly two decades and are now seen as serious competition to major brands.
“It wasn’t just about his (Cruz) basketball skills, since that’s a given already. His high-level work ethic, natural simplicity, and a strong sense of character make him a perfect fit for the brand,” said Lee Tajonera, PUMA Philippines’ marketing head.
“We go after players who work hard and play hard, players who don’t mind the stats and just play the game the right way. More importantly, we go after athletes with solid character.”
The Far Eastern University alumnus is, of course, extremely happy for the opportunity to represent the brand that has been a big part of the global basketball culture. For Cruz, it is definitely an honor.
“Para sa’kin, nakakatuwa kasi… Alam mo yun, maraming mga players na mas matatagal na sa’kin sa PBA, or mas sikat, or talent-wise mas magagaling sa akin, pero ako pa yung nabigyan ng chance ng PUMA na maging brand ambassador,” said Cruz.
“It’s a big responsibility para sa akin. But at the same time, I feel so overwhelmed and honored.”
