Wushu star Agatha Wong duplicated her strong showing two years ago in Kuala Lumpur to come up with her second straight Southeast Asian Games gold in women’s taijiquan, Sunday at the World Trade Center, Pasay City.
The 21-year-old artist provided great technique in her routine to get 9.670 from the jury, a clear 0.12 advantage from surprise silver medalist Basma Lachar of Brunei at 9.550.
“It’s a very special win for me kasi this category is the highest level na category sa wushu [taolu] na women’s event,” the now two-time champion shared.
“And to win second time in a row, it’s a very special win and I dedicate it to my family and to my teammate who recently passed away at the age of 11, this is for him. Basta I did it for my country and for my fellow men, the Filipinos.”
Wong added that it was a struggle heading into the Games as the national team needed to train in China. “We spent four months in China, so that was really isolation from my home. When I came back, we have to fly back for the World Championships (in Shanghai).
“You have to belief in yourself first, you put yourself first before others, that is how you will get your success,” ended the emotional champion.
Tran Thi Minh Huyen snagged the bronze with 9.530.
