Agatha Wong showed her masterclass after a huge come-from-behind take on taijijian brought her her fifth Southeast Asian Games gold in the women’s taijiquan-taijijian combined, Friday at the Chroy Changvar Convention Center in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The 24-year-old taolu star brought the country its 28th title in these Games and the first in wushu.
Wong bagged her first gold in the 2017 Kuala Lumpur Games in taijiquan, the next two in the 2019 home Games in both taijiquan and taijijian, and the fourth in 2021 Hanoi Games in taijijian.
“It was hard. Nagte-training ako twice a day, and then I still have to study at night. Kahit weekends I don’t really get to rest kasi yung training namin is Monday to Saturday,” Wong said.
Wong had to grind this fifth title out after ending in the bronze-medal position after the barehand form taijiquan with 9.5800 behind Malaysia’s Sydney Chin Sy Xuan’s 9.6400 and Brunei’s Basma Lachkar’s 9.6100.
A solid performance in the taijijian with a huge 9.683 score line saw her snag the gold for a total of 19.623.
Xuan ended in silver with 19.196 and Lachkar completed the podium with 19.139.
