Alex Eala fights hard in first-round Wimbledon exit vs Krejcikova


Alex Eala exited in the first round of the ladies’ singles event at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships following a 6-3, 2-6, 1-6 defeat to reigning champion Barbora Krejcikova on Tuesday at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London.

The 20-year-old Filipina impressed early, stunning the Czech star by claiming the opening set with poise and precision.

She overcame a nervy start in her Wimbledon main draw debut — played on the iconic Centre Court — by winning five of the last six games to take the first set, 6-3.

Eala capitalized on Krejcikova’s early serving struggles and delivered clutch returns, especially during a grueling ten-minute eighth game.

Though the defending champion saved one set point in that stretch, Eala held her nerve and served out the set in the next game.

But the two-time Grand Slam champion Krejcikova, 29, responded with trademark resilience. She ramped up her aggression in the second set, breaking Eala twice and racing to a 5-0 lead.

Eala fought back with two games of her own, but Krejcikova ultimately closed out the set, 6-2, to level the match.

In the decider, Eala showed signs of life by holding serve to end a four-game Krejcikova run and trimming the deficit to 1-3.

That, however, proved to be her final stand.

Drawing on her wealth of experience, Krejcikova controlled the key rallies in the closing stages, winning the next three games to seal the match in just over two hours.

While the Czech champion advanced to face either USA’s Caroline Dolehide or the Netherlands’ Arantxa Rus in the next round as she continues her pursuit of a third Grand Slam title and a second consecutive Venus Rosewater Dish, Eala exits with her head held high.

Despite the loss, Eala’s gutsy performance against a seasoned champion on one of tennis’ biggest stages marks another milestone in her young career.

Now ranked No. 56 in the world, the Filipina will take a well-deserved rest before reassessing her plans for the rest of the season — carrying with her the lessons and confidence from this memorable Wimbledon debut.
