Mars Alba is set to join Akari, providing a timely boost to the Chargers’ setter rotation following the sudden retirement of starting playmaker and team captain Michelle Cobb.
The team announced the development on Wednesday afternoon.
Alba had recently parted ways with Choco Mucho after two seasons. She will join a young setter core featuring Kamille Cal and Bea Bonafe, a recent addition from Creamline ahead of the ongoing PVL On Tour.
The former UAAP Finals MVP’s arrival comes at a crucial time for Akari, following Cobb’s decision to retire and take on a new role as the team’s assistant manager.
“Chargers fam, can’t wait to see you po and sana po suportahan niyo po ako with the Akari Chargers. See you soon!” said Alba in a video posted by the Chargers.
Alba, however, is expected to miss some time as she is currently fulfilling her duties with Alas Pilipinas.
The 25-year-old playmaker will also reunite with former La Salle and Alas teammates Justine Jazareno and Fifi Sharma, with whom she won a championship during the UAAP Season 85 Women’s Volleyball Tournament.
Alba will also get the chance to play alongside her former F2 Logistics teammate Ivy Lacsina, now the leading scorer for Akari.
The Chargers are currently in the fifth spot in Pool B of the PVL On Tour with a 1-3 record.
