Sean Anthony watched every game of Gilas Pilipinas Men in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games very closely.
After all — though he downplays it, he played a huge role in helping the team prepare for the regional meet.
In fact, the versatile 37-year-old forward was never absent during in every practice held at the Meralco Gym.
That is why Anthony was overjoyed after the Philippines triumphed over Cambodia in the final with a score of 80-69.
“I’m super happy. It was really nice to see the guys pull through and overcome all the adversity, come together, and play two tough games against Thailand and Indonesia,” said Anthony after NLEX’s 88-93 loss to Blackwater in the PBA on Tour preseason games last Sunday in Caloocan.
“For them to win those games, it has to be the best SEA Games win we’ve seen.”
Definitely, this was the most challenging gold yet for Gilas in the regional meet.
Gilas were dealt a 79-68 defeat by the hosts during group play before needing to dig deep in taking an 84-76 win to dethrone Indonesia.
In the final, Gilas played their best game in limiting the top-heavy Cambodian squad to reclaim regional supremacy.
“I played a very minimal role, and I don’t want to take away anything from those guys who were there and did everything. It feels great to be a part of that. I was messaging the guys throughout the tournament,” shared Anthony.
Of course, Gilas did not forget Anthony, inviting him to their celebration last week.
“It was cool that they invited me the other night for their celebration. I got close to the guys, and I felt like I learned a lot during my time there,” he expressed.
Now in the twilight of his career, Anthony hopes to one day get a chance to represent the Philippines on the international stage.
That is why when Gilas head coach Chot Reyes calls him, he won’t hesitate to answer the call of duty.
“When I messaged Coach Chot, it was already too late. I let him know that I’m looking forward to being part of future Gilas teams.”
