Rainer Maga bids UE goodbye after breakout UAAP season

In a shocking midnight revelation, University of the East guard Rainer Maga — once touted as the heir apparent to Noy Remogat — announced his departure from the Red Warriors following a breakout campaign in UAAP Season 87.

The 6-foot playmaker from Davao City made the announcement via his personal Facebook page at 12 midnight.

“I’m at a loss for words as I write this down. No one ever wants to leave behind something so valuable to them, and never in my wildest dreams did I expect that I would have to make such a difficult decision,” Maga wrote.

Maga, a transferee from San Beda, finally found his rhythm in the collegiate spotlight with UE this season.

In his lone year with the Red Warriors, he posted solid numbers, averaging 8.13 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.13 assists per game — becoming a key piece of head coach Jack Santiago’s rotation.

“In the industry I’m in, growth and improvement are vital—not just as an athlete, but as an individual. My family and I have come to a decision—one where my heart says no, but everyone around me says yes,” Maga continued.

Multiple sources indicate that the 23-year-old still hopes to remain in the UAAP despite only having one playing year left. His camp currently has no active plans to jump to the MPBL or declare for the PBA Rookie Draft.

“I am deeply indebted to everyone I played with and was coached by. I will always look back on the experiences and memories we shared, and the lessons that came with them—lessons that molded me into the player I am today,” he added.

“To my teammates and friends, my coaches, my management, my Lualhati—you will forever hold a special place in my heart. The laughter we shared, the pain we endured, the games we won and lost—these are memories I will never forget.”

For now, Maga is not yet willing to announce where he is headed next.

“Thank you for everything, UE—from welcoming me, taking care of me as a player, and shaping me into the person I am now. It has been an honor to represent the greatness of the Red and White,” he expressed.

“My heart is filled with nothing but gratitude. I am genuinely thankful for everyone, and for everything.”
