The Filoil EcoOil Centre was buzzing with energy as San Beda University secured a tough 66-64 victory over long-time rival Letran – made even more special by the return of the San Beda University Band after a long hiatus.
Absent during the Red Lions’ previous game against the Arellano Chiefs on September 28, the band had previously only been permitted to play for “internal events,” as reported by The Bedan.
Head coach Yuri Escueta emphasized the impact of the band’s return, noting how it reflected San Beda’s deep-rooted tradition of community support through both victories and challenges.
“The band is back, so nandiyan na ulit yung tambol namin, and saka tama na yung tono,” Escueta remarked after San Beda’s win.
“Siyempre, malaking bagay talaga yung suporta ng community sa amin, especially today – punong-puno.”
He also expressed his gratitude for the band’s consistent presence and support throughout his coaching journey.
“Malaking pasalamat ko lagi doon sa banda na yon eh, kasi even noong first year ko dito, kahit natatalo kami, andiyan lagi yung suporta ng band na yan sa amin. So thank you sa kanila,” Escueta added.
The game itself saw the Red Lions edge out the Letran Knights, thanks to a career-high performance by Jomel Puno, who recorded 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Escueta also pointed out that this game was a valuable experience for the Red Lions, especially for the rookies, as it introduced them to the fierce rivalry between San Beda and Letran.
“It’s a good experience, especially sa mga bagong players ko. Good experience for them,” Escueta noted.
“Naka-experience na rin sila ng Letran-San Beda, kasi iba talaga pag sa ganitong atmosphere ka naglalaro – parang playoffs.”
Looking ahead, Escueta anticipates another challenging contest when San Beda faces Mapua on October 8 at the Mall of Asia Arena, expecting the same intense atmosphere.
“At least may isa pa kaming game sa MOA against Mapua. I’m sure magiging ganun rin ang atmosphere noon. So good experience for everyone,” Escueta concluded.
