San Miguel has activated Shabazz Muhammad ahead of its 2021-22 PBA Governors’ Cup duel with Magnolia on Sunday at the Ynares Center.
The league posted the development to its website.
With this, the Beermen have officially replaced Orlando Johnson, whom they brought in to take over another returnee in Brandon Brown.
The 32-year-old played for a total of three games and averaged 22.0 points on 42.9-percent shooting from deep. He also had 8.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists.
The parting of ways between the former NBA veteran and the league’s winningest ball club, however, was quite unceremonious.
Multiple sources have told Tiebreaker Times that Johnson was notified by San Miguel of its decision to switch imports only via text message after their Saturday practice at Acropolis Gym.
On the other hand, Muhammad will finally see himself play in Asia’s pioneering pro league after an aborted stint with Meralco.
An NBA vet himself, the 29-year-old already committed to the Bolts prior to the season-ending tilt. He then backed out at the last minute due to family matters.
However, he became available months later, prompting the Beermen to inquire about his services and eventually sign him.
That, despite the solid play of Johnson in his last two games, including a near triple-double outing in a 110-102 win over ex-team Ginebra.
Muhammad is now San Miguel’s third reinforcement this conference. He joins a team that’s currently at fifth in the standings with a 5-3 record.
