The Perlas Spikers have called a halt to their ongoing bubble training at the St. Vincent Gym in Naguillan Road, Baguio.
This as seven players and a coach from the team have tested positive for COVID-19.
Baguio has recently been experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases. The latest report on June 27 stated that the province has 570 active cases.
In a letter by Perlas health officer Joy Acordon to the Games and Amusements Board, the infection began last June 22 when two players started losing their sense of taste and smell.
Perlas officials then decided to administer an antigen test to the entire team. It yielded positive results for seven players and a coach. The RT-PCR tests also had the same result.
The names of those who contracted the virus were withheld due for privacy.
The remaining players that tested negative were separated while those who tested positive have already been isolated.
“The infected athletes were young women, and some of them may have sneaked out of the Teachers’ Camp,” said Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong.
The players and coach will once again be re-tested on July 6.
Perlas has been in Baguio since June 2. It is preparing for the 2021 PVL Open Conference, slated to begin next month.
