NCAA allows players to join PVL Draft, but contract signing must wait

Just as it handles basketball players entering the PBA Draft, the NCAA requires volleyball players to secure clearance from the NCAA Management Committee before entering the Premier Volleyball League Draft.

Season 100 ManCom chairman Herc Callanta clarified that the league is not barring student-athletes from applying for the PVL Draft, as long as they have clearance from both the NCAA and their respective athletic directors.

“As I understand, ang deadline ng application is on May 23, which is two days from now. Ang rule ng NCAA is for the potential draftees, those who are interested in getting drafted by the PVL teams, inform the management committee about their intention to join the Draft. So that’s all they have to do,” said Callanta.

“The NCAA will not prevent anyone from being drafted, and in fact will endorse the request to be drafted. So, ayun lang, that’s all they need to do. To my knowledge, three players have already signified their intention of wanting to be drafted to the PVL. And they have written letters already and the respective ManCom representatives of those schools have already endorsed the letters.”

Arellano’s ManCom representative Peter Cayco also clarified that NCAA prospects are allowed to participate in the PVL Draft Combine, which is scheduled for next week.

“Ito ang rules ng NCAA regarding drafting noh, actually may dalawa na nag-apply, they will [write to] the NCAA — informing the NCAA of their plan to join the Draft. Now, pinapayagan yan ng NCAA as long as they do not sign a contract. So, they can join the Draft, the Combine, they can be drafted, they can practice with their new team, pero wag lang sila mag-sign muna and wag muna sila maglalaro rin [ng] official game. Mga exhibition games, pwede yan. Papayagan namin,” Cayco explained.

Among the early applicants is Mycah Go, along with two other prospects, one of whom is from Lyceum.

Callanta also emphasized that once a player is drafted, they still cannot sign a contract until after their NCAA season concludes.

“They are not going to play yet. Secondly, usually yan, they are allowed to be drafted if the — and this goes for even basketball, all professional leagues that want to draft NCAA players — they can actually be drafted. [However] they should not sign a contract yet for as long as the season is ongoing. They will be offered contracts, I’m sure, but they should not sign yet their contracts prior to the end of the season,” said Callanta.

In the previous season, only four out of 47 PVL Draft applicants came from the NCAA: Lorraine Pecaña, Razel Aldea, Donnalyn Paralejas, and Dodee Batindaan.
