Filipina5 push Iran to limit before late defeat to open Futsal Asian Cup

The Philippine Women’s National Futsal Team opened its AFC Women’s Futsal Asian Cup China 2025 campaign in heartbreaking fashion, falling 1-0 to powerhouse Iran on Wednesday at the Hohhot Sports Centre.

Nicknamed the Filipina5, the tournament debutants came close to securing a remarkable result, but a late goal from Maral Torkaman dashed their hopes. The ninth-ranked Team Melli Futsal Zanan secured all three points to begin their Group B campaign on a winning note.

Earlier in the match, returning player Isabella Bandoja and team captain Bella Flanigan each had opportunities to score, but were unable to convert. Goalkeeper Samantha Hughes delivered a stellar performance between the posts, making several crucial saves to keep Coach Rafa Rodriguez’s side in contention.

However, with just under two minutes remaining, Iran finally broke through.

Both teams will be back in action on Friday at the same venue. The Philippines will take on Southeast Asian rival Vietnam at 11:00 AM — a rematch of their 2024 ASEAN Women’s Futsal Championship clash in Pasig, where Vietnam dominated with a 6-1 victory.

Meanwhile, Iran will aim to build on its momentum when it faces Hong Kong later that day at 5:00 PM.
