Rey Remogat sank two clutch three-pointers, while Miguel Yniguez delivered steady free-throw shooting in the final six minutes to lead University of the Philippines to an 80-76 come-from-behind victory over an upset-minded Manila Central University in the PGFlex Invitational Basketball Tournament on Monday at the Paco Arena in Manila.
Clinging to a slim 75-73 lead, the Maroons turned to Remogat, a transferee from University of the East. And he delivered his second triple of the period with just 26 seconds left on the clock.
The shot sent UP’s passionate supporters into a frenzy.
However, the resilient Supremos refused to back down. MJ Joson responded with a quick three-pointer just four seconds later, setting up a dramatic conclusion to the game.
Despite Nigerian big man Francis Nnoruka missing two crucial free throws, UP showcased their defensive prowess on the ensuing possession.
Yniguez then iced the game with two calm free throws, securing the Maroons’ record at 3-2 in the seven-team preseason tournament presented by Quintana.
Nnoruka still spearheaded the Maroons’ offense, finishing with 31 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.
Remogat contributed 18 points, while Yniguez added 13.
UP now has a chance to clinch the third outright semifinal spot if they can overcome the Adamson Falcons in the final game of the elimination round on Wednesday, November 20, at the same venue.
The Falcons, riding high after a narrow 55-54 win over the previously unbeaten La Salle Archers, will look to build on their momentum.
Adamson capitalized on the absence of Gilas pool member Mason Amos and the ailing Kean Baclaan to improve to 2-3.
The winner of the UP-Adamson clash will join early semifinalists La Salle and Centro Escolar University.
Meanwhile, in another game, Immaculada Concepcion College stunned Olivarez College, 89-86, in overtime to secure their second straight win, improving their record to 2-3.
