Matthew Wright promised Topex Robinson that he would give him a successful debut as the interim head coach of Phoenix Super LPG, Monday.
He did just that.
Inspired by the late, great, Kobe Bryant, the Fil-Canadian guard unloaded 36 big points to power the Fuel Masters to a 118-96 win over Meralco.
A man of his word, indeed.
“I just wanted to get Coach Topex his first career win as a head coach. I told him before the game I wasn’t gonna let him down,” Wright said post-game.
Robinson himself later confirmed that the 29-year-old did make that promise. And of course, he’s glad that it came true.
“Matt told me he’s gonna give me this win. That’s what he just reminded me,” said the 45-year-old mentor.
But beyond Wright keeping his word, Robinson is proud of the winning mentality the four-year pro possesses.
“I just love the way he competes,” said the former Lyceum coach, who joined Phoenix together with former head coach Louie Alas in 2017.
“He’s a winner — he hates to lose. That’s what I love about him and that’s what I hate about him. That goes both ways,” he added with a slight grin.
Now that their first game is in the books, Robinson and Phoenix now look to grow together as the season inside the bubble goes along.
“We just have to keep learning together. We’re a young team, we’re just excited with the opportunity to play against the best. We’re just all for that.”
