Jaja Santiago set for US move after seven seasons in Japan

Jaja Santiago’s volleyball journey is set to take her to the United States.

The 6-foot-5 middle blocker revealed that she will continue her professional career in the US after spending the last seven seasons in Japan’s top-tier SV.League.

Santiago disclosed the major career move to reporters on Friday during the Japan-Czechia match in Week 2 of the 2026 FIVB Volleyball Nations League at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

“I’m going to the US next season. Hulaan niyo na lang kung saan doon,” she said.

“I think next week, the league will announce — the league where I will play.”

The 30-year-old native of Tanza, Cavite last saw action in April with the Denso Airybees during the 2025-26 SV.League season.

With several months to go before her new campaign begins, Santiago is spending her vacation in the Philippines while making sure she stays in shape ahead of her move overseas.

“Right now, I’m working out with Coach Luis (De Mesa), kailangan kasi. Kaming dalawa ni Taka (Minowa), we’re gonna find a place na makakapag-workout, makakapag-ball training ako kasi I need to be active kasi January pa ‘yung liga. I’ll be there in November,” she shared.

“Sobrang laki nung gap, so kailangan ko maghanap ng way para maging kondisyon pagdating doon.”

Santiago spent her first five seasons in Japan with the Saitama Ageo Medics in the then-V.League Division 1 before transferring to Osaka Marvelous. She later helped the club capture the 2024-25 SV.League championship.

During her stint in Japan, Santiago established herself as one of the league’s premier middle blockers, earning two Best Middle Blocker awards.

While she prepares for her next chapter in the United States, Santiago remains open to opportunities that may arise before her departure.

“Actually, there are a lot of offers. But I’m still thinking kasi sabi ko rin kay Taka, gusto ko magpahinga,” said Santiago, who acquired Japanese citizenship in 2024.

“Not sure right now, pero if ever kaya ng schedule ko — kasi yung plano ko talaga ngayon pag-uwi ko, spend time with my family, go to another country with Taka. So tinitingnan pa namin kung magki-click yung schedule namin. Malay niyo.”
