Gilas Pilipinas’ women’s program is already on an upward path with its current roster.
But with an influx of exciting Fil-Am prospects available sooner or later, the program’s growth will accelerate further.
Fil-Am talents will have the chance to show their potential to Coach Pat Aquino in this weekend’s tryouts organized by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and Fil-Am Nation Select.
And Aquino is nothing but optimistic of the potential of the 25 invitees come June 4 (June 5, Manila time).
“With those talents coming in, and helping out the others back home, it will be a great future for women’s basketball in the Philippines,” Aquino said.
The multi-titled tactician knows that adding prospects who have little to no interaction with their Philippines-based teammates will take a bit of adjustment.
But the decorated tactician believes that with just the sheer talent of the prospects, they will be able to fit into the program sooner rather than later.
“I know for a fact that of course, when you’re new to the team there’s going to be an adjustment period,” Aquino said in Filipino.
“But I think with their knowledge of basketball, it would be very easy for us to adjust with that experience… Our level will be better in the future.”
The tryouts slated Friday and Saturday (Saturday and Sunday, Manila) will be headlined by University of Washington alum Mai-Loni Henson, and NAIA MVP and national champion Stefanie Berberabe.
Aquino and Fil-Am Nation Select have been in collaboration since last year in identifying and connecting with the top Fil-Am talents in the US.
