PVL: Gumabao, Creamline quickly dispatch Gerflor, seize solo lead

ANTIPOLO – Creamline seized control of the top spot after blanking Gerflor, 25-15, 25-12, 25-8 in the Premier Volleyball League Second All-Filipino Conference, Thursday at the Ynares Center here.

Cool Smashers head coach Sherwin Meneses emptied his bench against the Defenders, fielding all 14 of his players in their third consecutive of the tournament, which placed them at the number one seat with a 3-0 record.

“Syempre yung opportunity na maipasok sa loob, napakahalaga sa team namin kasi yung mga bench players namin talagang pang-first six din,” said Meneses, as 11 of his players scored in the 74-minute match.

“Tinitignan namin ngayon kung ano pa talaga yung mas best sa team, it’s a good problem nga para sa aming mga coaches pero syempre kailangan ng consistency para makalaro ng maganda every game,” he added.

After breezing past the Defenders in the opener, Creamline stepped on the gas pedal in the second frame and transformed a 15-12 lead to a 25-12 victory via a 10-0 blast capped off by back-to-back points from Pau Soriano.

The Rebisco-backed squad then used an 12-3 finishing kick, turning a 13-5 advantage to a lopsided 25-8 win to complete the sweep.

“Ang ginawa namin, syempre pinaghandaan namin saka nag-check kami ng mga lapses namin last game. Thankful ako kasi yung mga players ko talagang nag-trabaho ngayon,” added Meneses.

Michele Gumabao paced the Cool Smashers’ balanced offensive showing with 12 points on 12 attacks while Jema Galanza and Tots Carlos each had seven markers in the victory.

Kyle Negrito tossed 11 excellent sets in the victory while Ella De Jesus had six excellent digs and three excellent receptions.

The Defenders dropped to 0-3 with the loss, absorbing their eighth consecutive loss in the professional league dating back to the Invitational Conference.

Menchie Tubiera and Mary Grace Berte each came up with five points for the struggling Gerflor.

Gerflor will look for its first win against Chery Tiggo on Thursday, 2:00 p.m. at the FilOil EcoOil Centre.
