Alleiah Malaluan draws strength from Alas experience ahead of PLDT debut

Fresh off her first stint with Alas Pilipinas in the VTV Cup, Alleiah Malaluan is eager to bring her newfound experience and confidence to the Premier Volleyball League Taraflex.

Selected ninth overall in the 2025 PVL Draft by PLDT, Malaluan was in attendance for the High Speed Hitters’ dominant 25-22, 25-15, 25-16 sweep of the Petro Gazz Angels at the Capital Arena on Saturday — her first time watching her new team live.

While PLDT was opening its 2025 PVL On Tour campaign, the 5-foot-11 outside spiker was in Vietnam, representing the Philippine women’s national volleyball team in the prestigious VTV Cup.

After witnessing PLDT’s commanding win over the defending All-Filipino champions, Malaluan couldn’t hide her excitement about joining the squad.

“Actually, yun talaga rin yung habol ko sa Alas eh, yung experience kasi I know as a player marami pa akong pwedeng matutunan kaya I grabbed that opportunity,” said Malaluan.

“I think it will help me rin in the long run kasi sana yung natutunan ko doon hindi ko lang ma-apply sa Alas kundi pati na rin dito sa PLDT,” she added.

Malaluan also credited her time with Alas Pilipinas for helping restore the confidence she once had. Despite playing a limited role in the VTV Cup, she made her presence felt — most notably in their semifinal bout against Korabelka of Russia, where she tallied 11 points in a 16-25, 27-25, 17-25, 22-25 defeat.

A former standout at De La Salle University, Malaluan was a key figure in the Lady Spikers’ runner-up finish in UAAP Season 84. She served as the team’s go-to scorer during their Finals campaign against National University.

However, her momentum was disrupted the following year. A knee injury sidelined her for the first four games of Season 85 and significantly impacted her performance throughout the rest of the season and into Season 86.

In her final year with La Salle in Season 87, Malaluan showed glimpses of her old form but struggled to find consistency. With the boost she received from her Alas stint, she feels determined to turn the page.

“I’m really really thankful kasi [the Alas] opportunity is helping me build myself back again, and sana magtuloy tuloy na po,” she said.
