With some of its more experienced players skipping this edition of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship, Team USA discovered some hidden gems among its collegiate ranks.
One standout was opposite hitter Gabriel “Gabi” Garcia, a former member of the Puerto Rico national team.
Having represented the Stars and Stripes for just over a year, Garcia embraced the opportunity and seized the moment, leading the squad into the next round of the World Championship.
The 26-year-old wing spiker tallied 12 points through eight attacks, two blocks, and two service aces. His performances have helped the US team maintain a perfect record, having not dropped a set in two matches.
“I think we handled it pretty well. In the beginning, we did a lot of good things, but in the middle of the match, we let up a little. Portugal played really well — they put up a good fight. There were moments we maintained a higher level and kept them lower, instead of letting them get close to us,” Garcia said.
A former standout at Brigham Young University, Garcia was also proud of how this young but talented US squad drew from their experience in the recent VNL season while embracing the moment on volleyball’s grandest stage.
“It’s fun. We’re enjoying the Philippines, we’re enjoying our time here. We’re savoring every single moment together. Once we step onto the court, we’ll give it our all and support each other the best way we can,” he shared.
For a young player who came from the islands and now shines under the sport’s brightest spotlight, Garcia had a message for anyone aspiring to follow in his footsteps:
“Work hard. Nothing will be handed to you. Take every opportunity that comes your way. Life will challenge you, but keep going, stay strong, and never lose hope. Remember, this is a team sport — just like life. You’re never truly alone in anything you do,” he advised.
