Alex Cabagnot was one of those stars who shone bright on Wednesday night.
The 35-year-old made a rare triple-double for San Miguel Beermen, finishing with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists to help the defending Commissioner’s Cup champions blow past Reden Celda and the Columbian Dyip, 129-117.
This is now the Beermen’s third straight victory in the mid-season conference, after they started the tilt with three consecutive losses – making a lot of people think that San Miguel have finally regained their championship form.
However, Cabagnot begs to differ.
“We’re at .500 right now. We’re nowhere we want to be. We’re still at 3-3. We can’t get too high,” said the gunslinging point guard.
“We were definitely in the lows. We were 0-3 and we’re now 3-3 so we should just stay level-headed.”
It’s easy to understand where the 13-year league veteran. There’s still a long way to go in this conference for the Beermen, as they still have five games left that will dictate their position in the next round.
Moreover, San Miguel are still in the process of integrating pieces into their system – particularly import Renaldo Balkman and the 2017 Rookie Draft’s top pick Christian Standhardinger, who were both late additions to the team.
“We don’t wanna plateau right now and say we have everything figured out,” shared Cabagnot.
Despite that, the Filipino-American guard – who’s currently averaging 12.67 points, 7.67 rebounds, and a locals-leading 7.5 assists – is optimistic with how things will pan out for the Grand Slam favorites as the tilt rolls on.
“I expect us to continue to play cohesively as a unit and just continue to pay attention to details and stay ahead of the learning curve.
“While we’re doing that process, hopefully, we could come up with some wins,” Cabagnot closed.
