Though he is no longer logging in major minutes for the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, Mark Caguioa still made PBA history on Wednesday night.
In the Gin Kings’ 134-107 victory over the Columbian Dyip, the former league Most Valuable Player finished with eight points to move into the Top 15 all-time leading scorers in PBA history, as per the league’s stats head Fidel Mangonon.
Caguioa now has 9,931 points under his belt, surpassing PBA great Freddie Hubalde in the all-time scoring list. The Hall-of-Famer, whose career spanned for 15 seasons, has 9,927 points to his name.
After Wednesday, the 17-year league veteran is now just 69 points away from earning a spot in the elite 10,000-point club. The last player to make it into the 10K group was Rain or Shine Elasto Painters’ star guard James Yap.
Caguioa, in a rare interview with the press, acknowledged his recent feat. But he mentioned later on that individual achievements are the least of his concerns, as all that matters for him at this point in his career is winning titles.
“Yung mga individual (feats), I’m okay with it. Pero you know, when you’re ano na (at this age), I’m looking for more championships before I retire. Just more championships,” said the 38-year-old, sure-fire hall-of-famer, who is now in the twilight of his career.
“Those points, If I play, it will come but I’m not really after anything. So I’m after more championships,” insisted Caguioa, who has been with Ginebra since the start of his pro career in 2001 and has won six championships since then.
“I’m just gonna try to win more championships.”
