Will McAloney’s stay with Blackwater lasted just two months.
The burly 6-foot-4 forward out of Cebu has decided to not renew with the Bossing for the rest of the 2021-22 Philippine Basketball Association Governors’ Cup.
Bossing head coach Ariel Vanguardia confirmed the development to Tiebreaker Times.
“He didn’t agree to extend until the end of the conference,” said Vanguardia as McAloney became a restricted free agent. Blackwater can still match any contract offered to McAloney by any PBA club.
“It’s beyond my control with regards to contracts.”
McAloney was the 15th overall pick by NLEX in the 2019 PBA Rookie Draft. He saw his contract expire a few days ago. It was the same one-year extension given to him by the Road Warriors.
Vanguardia had high hopes for the 26-year-old McAloney when Blackwater traded Marion Magat in exchange for him and Mike Ayonayon, calling him the “Vic Manuel of the Future.”
In five games played for the Bossing, McAloney averaged 4.4 points on 47.4-percent shooting with 2.0 rebounds. It was a vast improvement from his 1.9 points and 1.9 rebounds averages in seven games played with NLEX last in the Philippine Cup.
Vanguardia is still leaving the doors open for McAloney if he wants to come back to the team.
“He’s free to test the market muna for now but he’s welcome to finish the conference with us if he agrees.”
Early this month, McAloney’s batchmate Roosevelt Adams also did not sign an extension with Terrafirma.
