It took quite a while to reach former ONE Featherweight World Champion Honorio “The Rock” Banario, because he had taken isolation to a whole new level.
Banario and his family temporarily moved further north to Buguias, Benguet to continue to train and isolate themselves from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which has brought the country’s main hub of Metro Manila to a standstill.
Banario is so far into the mountains that even mobile phone signals are hard to reach, and that is just the way he likes it.
“We moved here so I can continue training. The climate here is very good — it’s not that cold,” he said. “It’s like being in the lowlands down the mountains.
“The advantage I have here is that I am able to run every day, and the air we breathe is definitely fresh.”
Three hours from Baguio City, Banario takes advantage of the secluded area and continues his routine of running and exercising outdoors.
“There is a pathway here at the farm, that’s where I run,” Banario said. “When I reach the main road, that’s about twenty minutes already. So if I do two repetitions, that’s a good forty-minute run — a very decent warm-up.”
And before anyone thinks that Banario does this because he has a match coming up, the Mankayan, Benguet native promises that this is just how he rolls, with or without a bout to prepare for.
“We just don’t do this because we have a match. This is our lifestyle,” Banario said.
“Our day is not complete without any workout. It’s a way of life. That’s why we find ways to workout no matter the situation.”
