Tremont Waters may have taken all the headlines for his stellar performance, leading Puerto Rico past the Dominican Republic 102-97 in Group I of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.
However, George Conditt IV and John Holland both played a significant role in helping the 12 Magnificos pull through in the end.
Conditt delivered a pivotal block on the Dominican Republic’s Victor Riz with the game tied at 95-all, thanks to Waters’ lay-up. A few moments later, Holland converted a three-point shot to give the Puerto Ricans a 98-95 edge with 31 seconds left.
Waters then converted two free throws soon after to seal the win with a five-point cushion.
“First of all, props to the Dominican Republic. They made it a very tough game. But in that moment, we scouted Victor Liz. We know that he likes to go backdoor a lot. That’s what he does,” said Conditt IV.
“So when I saw him, I was on the opposite block, and I just went up to make a play, and that’s what I’m kind of known for — being the defensive anchor, being the last guy to make sure I could do something to help this team defensively,” he continued.
“I just went for it, and then by the grace of God, I got the block. John knocked down a big three that gave us the spark that we needed to push ahead and get the win.”
Holland’s three-point shot was his only field goal made in close to 21 minutes of action on the floor. The fact that he was able to receive the ball at such a critical time spoke volumes about how the 12 Magnificos believe in one another.
Any other player could have taken that shot during that moment, but it just had to be the one who did not particularly shoot well during that night. And boy did it pay off in a grandiose way.
“It’s always great to hit a big shot, but, you know, that’s why we practice. That’s why all of us have the confidence in each other, the trust in each other to take a shot in a crucial moment,” said the former San Miguel Beer import.
“That’s why we make a pass, make the extra pass. It’s all about the trust we have in one another. It’s not just one shot but the whole game.”
After overcoming the Dominicans, the Puerto Ricans will face another stiff test against Italy this Sunday. The Azzurri themselves are riding a wave of momentum after a come-from-behind win over Serbia.
Nevertheless, Conditt IV and Holland are looking forward to facing the Italians, especially since a win guarantees Puerto Rico a place in the quarterfinals.
“For me, I know Italy is going to be a tough team. They’re going to be a tough challenge. We’re going to make sure we really lock in on film and really lock in on what we have to do to be prepared for that game. I believe in this team. I believe we can be part of the top eight teams in the world and move on and see what happens from there,” said Conditt IV.
“What George said, we played them in preparation. We know they’re a great team, but I think we’ve grown. We’re a good team. I think we have a great opportunity, so we just have to do whatever it takes to get the win,” said Holland.
