An archer is often someone who seizes every opportunity to succeed, eagerly pouncing when the doors open.
Now, De La Salle University finds itself in the spotlight, with seven rival schools aiming to take them down in the UAAP Season 87 Men’s Basketball Tournament after the Green Archers clinched their 10th title last season.
Their title defense might be challenged by the departure of key players Jonnel Policarpio, Evan Nelle, and Mark Nonoy, who all played crucial roles in their Season 86 triumph.
Still, the Taft-based squad remains optimistic.
With a strong foundation built on culture, chemistry, and promising rookies, La Salle believes it has what it takes to secure back-to-back championships.
“We’ve created a program and culture that is solid with our pillars. If you’re good enough to fit into what we’re trying to build, you’re going to thrive,” head coach Topex Robinson shared with reporters at the UAAP press conference at Novotel Manila on Wednesday.
“For us, it’s not just about who we have on the team, but what culture we are building. The role of the players from last year is to keep that culture alive and share it with the new members,” he added.
Robinson’s goal to retain the crown extends beyond culture and chemistry; it also involves the enhanced recruitment strategy the Green Archers undertook during the offseason.
La Salle successfully brought in several standout recruits, including UST high school product Doy Dungo, former San Beda swingman Vhoris Marasigan, Gilas Youth big man Alex Konov, and one-and-done point guard Lian Romero.
“We recruit players who will be integral to what we’re building. If you make it to our lineup, it means you have a purpose to serve and to fill the gaps left by our veterans,” the former Phoenix head coach explained.
Adding fuel to La Salle’s bid for a second consecutive UAAP title is reigning MVP Kevin Quiambao, who chose to stay with the Green Archers despite receiving numerous offers from overseas clubs.
Robinson highlighted one key reason for Quiambao’s decision: to take on the point guard duties in the absence of Nonoy and Nelle.
Robinson, in awe of the 23-year-old forward, emphasized Quiambao’s drive to grow as a complete basketball player and lead La Salle to continued success.
“When KQ was deciding whether to stay, one of the things he mentioned was his desire to try new things. For me, that’s great – it keeps him on his toes. His skill level is already advanced, but there’s still so much room for growth,” he said about the reigning MVP.
“What I love about KQ is that he’s a student of the game.”
The Green Archers will kick off their title defense against Final Four rival National University on Sunday at 6:30 PM at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
