The Filipina5 opened their campaign in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games on a tough note, falling 7-1 to host nation Thailand at the Bangkokthonburi University Gymnasium in Samut Prakan.
Just like in the 2025 FIFA Women’s Futsal World Cup, Far Eastern University legend Inday Tolentin delivered a free kick that gave the Philippines a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute, aided by a slight deflection from fellow FEU alumna Regine Rebosura.
However, Thailand responded with relentless pressure, scoring seven unanswered goals across both halves to overpower the Filipina5.
“Thailand is a very strong team,” said Filipina5 coach Rafa Merino. “In the first 15 minutes, the Philippines played well. We were focused and concentrated. But when Thailand scored the fourth goal, the players were already thinking about the next match, hoping for more chances.
“I’m still happy with how we started the first half. It’s normal for a team to lose focus after conceding several goals. They were already thinking ahead to the next game,” he added.
With the win, Thailand topped the three-nation Group A with three points and a +6 goal difference, while the Philippines sits at the bottom with zero points and a -6 goal difference.
The Filipina5 will aim to keep their semifinal hopes alive when they face Malaysia tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. Manila time, also at the Bangkokthonburi University Gymnasium. Thailand, meanwhile, will meet Malaysia on Monday at the same time and venue.
